中世纪直到宗教改革以前，经院哲学最重要的教科书就是 Petrus Lombardus 的 Quatuor Libri Sententiarum，其中摘录了圣经、教父和中世纪学者们的著作，以系统神学方法按照主题组织起来。而 Lombardus 的贡献在于调和其中不同作者的不同观点。自此以后，经院学者们从事 Sententiarum 教学的主要产物就是这四卷书各种注疏。诸如 Duns Scotus、Thomas Aquinas、Bonaventura 等等重量级的学者几乎都留下了他们的评注。Bonaventura 的 Commentaria in Quatuor Libros Sententiarum 是他最具影响力的著作，从中我们就可以得到他关于神学四因的回答。
在 Bonaventura 身处的 13 世纪 50 年代，亚里士多德统治着一切科学。当时的神学界，一个重要的议题就是：神学如何是亚里士多德式科学？在评注的开篇 Bonaventura 以神学的四因明确了哲学、信仰与神学的关系。 并且 Aquinas 在 Summa Theologica 里也也给出了与 Bonaventura 类似的回答。
一、神学的主体/物质因是什么？
首先 Bonaventura 引证 Priscian 在语法中三种意义上的主体，其一根本的 principium radicale，例如构成单词的字母；其二综合的 totum integrale，例如完整的演说；其三普遍的 totum universale，例如有序、有意义的声音。 Bonaventura 认为上帝是神学在第一种根本的意义下的主体，基督是第二种综合的意义下的主体，而事物和现象(res et signa)是神学在普遍的意义下的主体。
